The President of the Republic, Iván Duque, announced, in the development of COP26 in Glasgow, that he will expand Marine Protected Areas, which represent 13.39% of the country’s water bodies.

Hand in hand with the Ministry of the Environment, the Government intends to protect nearly 16 million hectares in addition to the 12 million 439 thousand 028 that are currently part of the country’s protected areas.

In order to protect 30% of the seas, the president assured that he will manage the creation of two protected areas. One in the Hills and Hills of the North Pacific Basin and another in the Caribbean in the Beata mountain range.

Also, the president affirmed that he will promote the expansion of the Sanctuary of Fuana Acandí, Playón and Playona, in Chocó; as well as the Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary and the Yuruparí-Malpelo Integrated Management District.
This last area, according to the Minister of the Environment Carlos Eduardo Correa, is of vital importance due to the characteristics of its ecosystem, rich in biodiversity.
“Part of the importance of these areas is that they support essential biological processes, such as the reproduction of species, which allows them to be a source of resources for the surrounding areas and to maintain the reserves of some fishing resources.”, Assured the portfolio manager.
