This Sunday, April 23, runners Carlos Barreto and Gabriel León will represent Venezuela in the 37th edition of the Marathon Des Sables, a stage race that takes place in the Sahara Desert and will run until next Saturday, April 29.
Two Venezuelan runners will participate in the 37th edition of the legendary Marathon Des Sables (Marathon de las Arenas, translated from French). A 250 km race through the Sahara Desert, located in Morocco.
The marathon It consists of six stages and there will be one per day, from this Sunday 23 to Saturday 29 April.
This year the competition will welcome more than a thousand runners from all over the world, who, as it is a self-sufficiency race, will have to carry everything they need during the competition; that is, clothing, food, insulation, compass, road book, first aid, among other utensils.

In the south of the continent, there are representatives from Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela. The Venezuelan runners who will go to the Sahara are Carlos Barreto and Gabriel León, both from the city of Valencia, Carabobo state.
Gabriel León is a 41-year-old man, father of a family and nutritionist by profession, originally from Valencia. From 2010 to date he has participated in a series of highly prestigious competitions such as 100k in Patagonia, 171k Ultra Trail MontBlanc France, UTM Fuji Japan, Bear 100 Utah, USA.
For his part, Carlos Barreto, 55 years old, has a degree in Management, father of three children and has dedicated his life to doing high resistance races such as adventures, triathlons, the challenge of Los Volcanes, the Route of Los Conquistadores and ultra marathons; he resulting winner in several of them.
León and Barreto have alliances made with Venezuelan companies: they are ambassadors for the Valencian brand Cuadro and have the support of a sports supplement store.
The marathon on sands
The Marathon Des Sables is a race created by Frenchman Patrick Bauer in 1986. It is a free-paced walk; in which runners face food self-sufficiency. They must also face the extreme weather conditions of the Moroccan desert, where temperatures range from 45º during the day to 5º at night.
