The Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) declared, this Saturday, April 1, full freedom for Alfredo Chirinos and Aryenis Torrealba, former managers of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) accused of espionage, a crime that was dismissed, for which they were accused of their own corruption , disclosure of information, criminal association and terrorism.
Chirinos and Torrealba had been sentenced to five years in jail and the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (Dgcim) had been set as a place of confinement, however, both had received the benefit of house by jail.
The trial against these Petróleos de Venezuela workers took place almost a year after their arrest, which occurred on February 20, 2020. At that time, Iracara Chirinos, sister of Alfredo Chirinos told TalCual that “this is a political case. They are charging the boys for being honest.”
At the time, Chirinos expressed disagreement with the decision of Judge Anthony Fernández, of the 8th Court, by asserting that the report they used against Chirinos and Torrealba, prepared by the Corporate Management of Loss Prevention and Control (PCP) and the Pdvsa’s Security Management, “indicates another management and other people with names and surnames. Nowhere in that report does it say neither Aryenis nor Alfredo”; what he described as “a true legal contradiction in view of any citizen.”
On the date of the trial, Tarek William Saab, a prosecutor appointed by the constituent, published a statement on his Twitter account explaining that Aryenis Torrealba and Alfredo Chirinos were sentenced after “finding 35 documentary evidence” against them in relation to “inventories of Fuel Oil, refining system and routes of ships that traded with PDVSA”.
The document released by Tarek William Saab stated that “these officials leaked sensitive and confidential information from the oil industry, which resulted in the imposition of sanctions by the United States Government.”
