The prominent plastic artist Juan Moreira (1938) has just passed away in Havana.
He graduated as a professional draftsman in 1958 at the Fernando Aguado y Rico Higher School of Trades and Crafts in Havana. In 1960 he took a Commercial Art course at the Escuela Estudio Martín in Havana and in 1963 he graduated from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts and worked at the Experimental Graphic Workshop.
Among his numerous recognitions, he received the First Prize for drawing at the First Provincial Hall of Professors and Instructors of Visual Arts in Havana (1973); He was an Honorable Mention at the VII Kosice Biennial in Czechoslovakia (1984) and Third Prize at the III Nicomedes García Gómez Foundation Painting Contest in Segovia, Spain (2001). He received the Diploma of Artistic Merit, awarded by the Higher Institute of Art.
His works are part of the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba; the Museum of the Americas in Managua, Nicaragua; the Latin American Gallery in Krakow, Poland; the Museum of Cuban Art in Vienna, Austria, the National Gallery of Jamaica, in Kingston; the Museum of the Schools in Gotha, Germany; Saint Thomas University in Houston, Texas; and the Royal Ontario Museum in Ontario, Canada.
He was the first Cuban painter who illustrated The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote the Stain, which he carried out with that overflowing and fertile imagination that characterizes all his work, diverse, polysemic and deeply rooted in European and Cuban references, from Picasso to Lam.
An intense, sincere and exceptional artist.
