MADRID, Spain.- The musician Generoso Jiménez, born in 1917, learned to play the trombone at a very young age in the municipal band of Cruces, Villa Clara, his hometown; and he came to be considered the father of the Cuban trombone.
Throughout his artistic life he was a member of renowned groups such as the Aragón Orchestra and the Tropicana Orchestra; but her encounter with Benny Moré would be decisive for the impulse of her career.
A Benny More He met him in 1952, during a recording on Cadena Azul. Since then, a great personal and professional relationship arose between them.
In his honor, Benny Moré frequently said during his recordings, “Generous, how good you play”; phrase that became very popular in Cuban culture.
In 1965, Generoso recorded “El Trombón Majadero”, considered a classic of the national discography.
In 2002 an album was recorded in his honor entitled precisely “Generous, how good you play”. The album, in which figures such as Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D’Rivera took part, was nominated for the Grammy Awards, for which Generoso traveled to New York to participate in the ceremony.
In 2003 he moved to Miami and in 2005 he received an Honorary Grammy Award for Artistic Excellence from the Latin Academy of Music Recordings (LARAS).
His last recording was for the album and documentary project “90 miles”, by Cuban singer Gloria Estefan.
Generoso Jiménez died in Miami on September 15, 2007, at the age of 90, due to kidney failure. His music influenced a whole generation of Cuban trombonists.
