The Minister of Social Development, Martín Lema, toured this Monday the 28th the facilities of the Ciudad Universitaria building located on Avenida 18 de Julio, corner of Julio Herrera and Obes, in Montevideo, where young people between 18 and 24 years old who are studying tertiary education will stay. The rooms are arranged on six floors, with exterior views, private bathrooms, closets, study tables and chairs.
Ciudad Universitaria Jorge Larrañaga is a new program of the National Youth Institute (INJU), which will host 180 young people from different departments, with a proposal for socio-educational support by technicians from the institution, to collaborate with the migration process of students to the capital.
During the tour, Lema reported that the objective is to achieve the integration of young people and provide them with “a place that allows them to develop opportunities and generate tools.” The Congress of Mayors will be in charge of the selection of the students who stay there, by channeling the requests received by the departmental mayors of the whole country, he explained.
About 180 young people will stay in the building, who will have common spaces on each floor with rooms equipped to study. There will also be a level for the dining room, with ample space for several electric stoves, refrigerators, tables, chairs and a laundry room.
Lema informed that the building is reformed by a company defined after a competitive process to undertake this project. In addition, he will work together with INJU’s social technical team to receive young people and provide support in four axes: coexistence, the world of work, culture and recreation, and personal skills.
Lema estimated that the University City will be operational as of October. For a second stage, it is planned to replicate the experience in other departments where there are educational offers.
