China authorized the import of Uruguayan sorghum to its territorytherefore a new product is integrated into the Uruguayan agro-export basket destined for that Asian market, confirmed to The Observer source from the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).

the authorization, officially announced this afternoon by the MGAP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairsis the result of several months of joint work by the Livestock and Chancellery teams.

Soon, both portfolios will disclose the details of the conditions that will have to be considered for the grain export operation.

In January of this year, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) received from the Chinese authorities a protocol to proceed with the export of sorghum, which was returned by the Uruguayans with some comments and adjustments that were agreed upon with producers. , exporters and seed growers together with the MGAP.

According to Blasina y Asociados in a note to The Observer, it was expected that by August, the month in which the next October planting begins to be projected, the protocol would be “fully operational”.

This Wednesday morning Senator Sebastián Da Silva reported via Twitter that exports had been enabled.

Weeks ago Da Silva organized a barbecue in his field to which he invited the Chinese authorities and there one of the requests he made to them was to bring forward the authorizations for sorghumas told at the time to The Observer.

The MGAP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide details on the qualification conditions.

How the producers see it

Juan Manuel García, vice-president of the National Agrarian Cooperative (Copagran), told The Observer that currently, due to the problem of the Melanaphis sacchari/sorghi plague, known as the yellow aphid, which compromises crop yields, “sorghum is a crop that has less and less place (in the Uruguayan agricultural area). Producers opt for corn, soybeans, sunflower that have more income”.

“Undoubtedly, if there is a market that compensates the agronomic problems of the crop with a price and improves income, (the area) could grow,” he assured.

The sorghum produced in Uruguay is destined for energy and fodder and since the 2014/15 campaign the cultivated area has been decreasing. In that season it was the last in which 80,000 hectares were exceeded, and since 2017/18 they have not exceeded 30,000.
