Bogotá, first destination of Venezuelan migration in Colombia

Bogotá is the first residence destination for Venezuelan migrants upon arrival in Colombia. This was determined by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) this Tuesday in the presentation of the third round of the Migration Pulse Survey.

(Venezuela registered inflation of 1.4% in March, the lowest since 2012).

Thus, when asked “In which department did you reside when you arrived in Colombia for the first time?”, 24.2% of the migrants from the neighboring country had their first city of residence in Bogotá. It is followed by Norte de Santander, Antioquia and Atlántico., with 14.3%; 9.5% and 8.3%, respectively. Valle del Cauca has for its part 7% of the reception.

In contrast, Chocó, Caquetá and Casanare have the lowest levels of reception of migrants with levels of 0.1% and 0.3%, for each one. However, there are seven departments that migrants did not report as their first place of residence upon arrival in the country, such as Putumayo, Vichada and Vaupés, for example.

(The World Bank lowers Latin America’s growth to 2.3% due to inflation).

Regarding the Special Residence Permit (PEP), 15.4% of the migrants surveyed between January and February 2022 reported having it, while 84.6% did not. Of this 15.4% who have the PEP, 15.7% were women and 15.0% men. Since 2018, 41.3% of this population has the permit and since 2019, 24.2%.

When the respondents were asked to think about the best job they had in Venezuela, 30.4% answered that they were employed in the sector as service workers and shop and merchandise vendors for the period January-February 2022, of this percentage, 37.6% were women and 24.9% were men.
