The XVI Gibara International Film Festival begins

Today the XVI Gibara International Film Festival was inaugurated, an event that resurfaces after two editions suspended by Covid-19 and in a complex economic context worldwide, said its director, Sergio Benvenuto.

The Festival, expressed Benvenuto, is committed to retaking the essence of the event created by Humberto Solás. It is a tribute to its founder and to the values ​​exhibited by him in the Poor Cinema Manifesto.

In this edition, Nelson Rodríguez (1938-2020), 2007 National Film Award winner, editor of Solás’ work and of important films of Cuban and Ibero-American cinematography will be remembered.

Fiction feature films stand out in the programming: bye bye idiots (Albert Dupontel, France, 2020), Papicha, dreams of freedom (Mounia Meddour, Algeria, 2019) and the Cuban Stories of one more daywith general direction of Fernando Pérez.

in documentaries, hostilities (Sebastian Molina, Mexico, 2021), Bush (Fábio Nascimento and Ingrid Fadnes, Brazil-Norway, 2020), A journey to us (Luis Cintora, Spain, 2021) and People of the documentary (Inti Herrera, Cuba, 2022), among others.

The theoretical program will have several forums at the Gibara House of Culture: “Directing cinema today: crisis, pandemic and challenges”, “Actor’s word: between reality and longing”, and “Curatorship and cinematographic programming in alternative festivals” .
