Through a statement, the Association of Social Security Workers (ATSS) assured that the worst forecasts they had about the reform were finally confirmed.
ATSS indicated that the reform goes in the direction of increasing the retirement age, increasing the years of work, reducing the averages with which retirement and pensions are calculated (replacement rate), without any impact on the business sectors and most favored in society and to the detriment of the entire working class and the people, in favor of the interests of big capital.
By mandate of international credit organizations (such as the IDB and the IMF) the AFAP’s system is deepened, making them mandatory for all workers.
The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, “again fails to fulfill his campaign promises, in which he said out loud that he would not change the rules of the game for current workers and, what is more, even positing that an increase in retirement age should not be mandatory, but encouraged.
Privileges of the Military Fund
On the other hand, ATSS refers in its statement that “the Caja Militar and its privileges are not mentioned, the business sector will continue to make less contributions than the workers, the deficit will always be paid by the people, the crises will be paid by them, at the cost of more years of work and lower contributions and retirements and shorter life spans”.
The Association of Social Security Workers expresses absolute rejection of the reform and any type of social security reform that is not in the interest of the working class and the people as a whole.
Proposals
The union maintains that the reform must imply: “the elimination of the AFAP’s, the equalization of the employer contribution to the personal contribution, the elimination of the exemptions to big capital, not to increase the retirement age or the years of work required for retirement and not reduce the replacement rate (retirement average)”.
They recall that ATSS “was, is and will be in the front row in defense of universal, comprehensive, state, supportive, fair, non-profit or AFAP’s social security and will also be together with the citizenry resisting this attempt to cut the rights of the people”.
