Santo Domingo.- Seven prisoners and a surveillance agent at the Anamuya Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in Higüey, were injured after a riot that occurred this Sunday and which is being investigated by the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC).

According to preliminary reports, the events occurred in the morning when two inmates were preparing to hold some visitors, after a search seized 65 sharp objects and 35 smart cell phones, as well as 222.3 grams of a white powder and 349.0 of a green vegetable that is presumed to be from cocaine and marijuana.

Despite this, those deprived of their liberty momentarily detained two prison officers and set fire to several mattresses, broke padlocks and sanitary facilities.

In these circumstances, the members of the special surveillance units developed a process of dialogue with the inmates that led to the handing over of the two detained agents.

In another area of ​​the compound, some inmates started a riot by setting fire to mattresses and breaking padlocks and the doors of the pavilions.

The incident led to the use of force to stop the aggression and safeguard inmates and authorities in the incident in which an agent was injured with a blunt blow and seven inmates with pellets, the DGSPC indicated.
