3-0: Guabirá is not enough against Wilstermann

The Guabira thrashed 3-0 at Wilsterman but it was not enough to turn around the 4-0 lead achieved in the first leg by the ‘aviadores’, who advanced to the group stage of the South American Cup.

A double by Ecuadorian Kevin Mina in the 20th and 50th minutes and a goal by Bolivian Layonel Figueroa in the 93rd minute encouraged the enthusiasm of those led by former Bolivian coach Mauricio Soria, although they were not enough to force penalties with Chilean Miguel Ponce’s squad .

The ‘sugar bowlers’ put a lot of pressure in the first half of the match knowing they needed to reverse Wilstermann’s lofty 4-0, which was somewhat more cautious not to risk their advantage.

Santotomeño Luis Leal and Bolivian Fran Supayabe had a good combination in the 17th minute that could have been the first for the locals, but goalkeeper Luis Cárdenas was able to contain the shot.

In the 20th minute, Leal tried again a shot that Cárdenas barely stopped, but Argentine defender Santiago Echeverría cleared badly, giving rise to Mina’s first goal.

Soria’s pupils continued trying to close the gap with new arrivals, especially Mina and Leal, a script that was almost repeated in the second half.

The second ‘sugar’ conquest came in the 50th minute, with a pass from Alejandro Meleán for an inspired Mina who beat the ‘aviator’ goalkeeper. Cárdenas had another difficult moment two minutes later when Guabirá tried to look for the third and a shot from Velasco almost caught him off guard.

Wilstermann’s defense made some mistakes that allowed more arrivals from the hosts, so Cárdenas was very busy during the second half.

The entry of Colombian Humberto Osorio and Rodrigo Vargas Castillo in the 74th minute changed the configuration of the match, with a more offensive Wilstermann and a misplaced Guabirá before the ‘aviators’ attacks. Both forwards were very active and gave goalkeeper Elder Arauz more work in the final minutes of the match.

The game heated up in added time, in which Guabirá reacted and scored a third goal in the 93rd minute with a pass from Montenegro to the recently entered Figueroa, who almost immediately tried unsuccessfully to equalize the aggregate.
