Yubrank Suazo

Yubrank Suazo has been imprisoned and isolated for a month in El Chipote

The political prisoner Yubrank Suazo, 32, completed this Saturday, June 18, a month of being locked up in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as El Chipote. The opponent, a member of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD), remains in a solitary cell and in all this time they have not allowed him any contact with his family.

“We have not been able to see it. They only allow us to give them water, juices, sometimes some yogurt, Ensure milk, things like that, which we hope they give them because they can help their nutrition. They also authorize us to deliver and remove, every eight days, some of their belongings, such as clothes, which need to be cleaned, “said Wilfredo Suazo, father of the prisoner of conscience, in an interview with CONFIDENTIAL.

She added that her son has stomach and blood pressure problems, so in El Chipote they were authorized to take the pills and vitamins that he requires, although they do not know if they are really being delivered.

He explained that the only one who has been able to see Yubrank, and only for five minutes, was the lawyer Maynor Curtis, during the first hearing in which he was accused ofe “conspiracy to commit impairment” against the State of Nicaragua. The Fifth Court of the Criminal District of Managua, in charge of Judge Nalia Nadezhda Úbeda Obando, is handling the case against the prisoner of conscience.

Suazo assured that his son informed them, through Curtis, that “he is physically, spiritually and morally well, that he is a man of faith, that we pray a lot, and that we take care of ourselves.”

Wait for next round of visits

The family hopes that after the second hearing, which they still do not know when it will take place, the authorities will allow them to see or visit Yubrank for a few minutes.

“We are hopeful that in the next round of visits that the political prisoners of El Chipote have let us see it. The lawyer thinks that perhaps after the second hearing we will have the opportunity to see him, but we directly do not know anything,” said the father of the political prisoner.

He pointed out that they have previously requested to be at the hearings of the trial and that the lawyer has introduced writings, requesting the visits, but so far “we have not had any response.”

Suazo was violently detained by agents of the regime Police when he was at his home, early Wednesday morning May 18, 2022.

second arrest

In 2018, Yubrank was imprisoned for the first time by the Ortega-Murillo regime, which at the time accused him of allegedly committing acts of terrorism, attempted murder, threats with weapons, and hindering public services. Later, in June 2019, after nine months of confinement in the National Penitentiary System, Jorge Navarro, known as La Modelo, was released along with other political prisoners under the controversial Amnesty Law created by Ortega.

Suazo recalled that those first months of confinement that his son suffered were “terrible” and, he stressed, now “the circumstances remain the same.”

“It is horrible to have a child locked up unjustly. But, we are spiritually strong and family accompaniment eases the pain a bit. We trust in God that things are processed legally, that the light of truth prevails, of justice, that his human rights are respected, not only my son, everyone, and that we can have the opportunity to see him and have him. home again,” he concluded.
