Yipsi Moreno leaves the post of Athletics Commissioner in the midst of the sports crisis in Cuba

What started as a rumor has finally been confirmed. Yipsi Moreno has resigned from her position as National Athletics Commissioner, a few days after three members of the Cuban delegation that participated in the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships escaped.

In a short note published this Saturday on the official site Hit it was reported on “the release of Yipsi Moreno from her responsibilities as national athletics commissioner.” The text, signed by the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), ensures that the decision was made in response to the “personal will” of the former athlete.

As the new athletics commissioner “comrade Rolando Carlos Charró Estrada has been appointed, who worked as director of Inder in the province of Guantánamo,” concludes the information that does not detail the causes that led Moreno to leave office.

The Olympic champion in Beijing 2008 and silver in Athens 2004 in the hammer throw, has led Cuban athletics since 2018, in one of the worst moments in its history. The constant escapes of athletes, the deterioration of the infrastructure for the preparation of athletes and the authoritarian methods of Moreno have placed this discipline on the brink of the abyss.

During her time as Commissioner, the three-time world champion received numerous criticisms and questions for developing a network of privileges to favor the athletes closest to her, while harassing others who ended up withdrawing from athletics or emigrating. Patronage and ideological excesses also characterized her mandate.

The final blow to his career at the head of this entity was given by the disastrous performance of the Cuban delegation at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, United States. The Island did not obtain any medal in the event and, in addition, lost three members of its squad: Olympic medalist and world discus championYaime Perez; the javelin Yiselena Ballar and physiotherapist Carlos González Morales.

The concise statement from Inder recognizes “the effort that Yipsi Moreno made in his time at the head of athletics”, but does not praise his work, a sign that the former athlete has not left his position in the best terms. So far it is unknown if she will have other responsibilities within the administrative structures of Cuban sports.
