The government of Luis Lacalle Pou strengthens its ties with the Catholic religion by attending the beatification of Jacinto Vera, who was the first archbishop of Montevideo.
With some 15,000 people -according to numbers from the Catholic Church itself- the current Archbishop of Montevideo, Daniel Sturla, officiated what was the celebration of what is, officially, the first step for a person to be declared a saint by the Vatican .
On behalf of the government and the multicolored coalition, the following were present: President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, Vice President Beatriz Argimón, José Mujica together with Lucía Topolansky, Pedro Bordaberry, Guido Manini Ríos, Álvaro Delgado, as well as legislators and other leaders.
Lacalle Pou and Manini Río were distanced after the controversy over the separation from the position of the former Minister of Housing, Irene Moreira, who discretionally delivered a social interest home to a Cabildo Abierto militant.
Why is Jacinto Vera heading to be a Catholic saint?
One of the most notable events attributed to the venerable Jacinto Vera, according to the Catholic Church website, is the miraculous healing of María del Carmen Artagaveytia Usher, a fourteen-year-old girl who suffered from a serious infection after an appendicitis operation in 1936. Despite the fact that the best doctors of the time treated her, the situation quickly worsened and the girl was on the verge of death.
However, thanks to the intervention of her uncle Rafael Algorta Camusso, who brought her a card with a relic of the venerable Jacinto Vera, the girl managed to heal completely. The relic was applied to the girl’s wound and her family prayed with faith through the intercession of the venerable Jacinto Vera. That same night, the fever disappeared and the girl made a full recovery in a short time. The cure was fast and scientifically inexplicable.
The story of the healing of María del Carmen Artagaveytia Usher was presented shortly after the fact and was the subject of study in 2017. An exhaustive medical report was produced and evaluated by a medical board in the Vatican. The children of María del Carmen Artagaveytia Usher testified before the court that they had always known about the fact, based on the testimony of her mother. They provided various elements and memories, among them, that her mother had on her nightstand the print with the relic of Bishop Jacinto Vera that she had placed in her wound.
This case of miraculous healing has been considered by many as proof of the divine intercession of the venerable Jacinto Vera. The story has been spread by the Catholic Church and has been a reason for devotion for many believers. The miraculous healing of María del Carmen Artagaveytia Usher has been a fact that has demonstrated faith and trust in divine intercession through the centuries.
