With exports on the rise, a new International Dulce de Leche Day is celebrated

Dulce de leche is one of the ice cream flavors preferred by Argentines.

Argentine exports of dulce de leche totaled some 4,079 tons in 2021, 19% more than in 2020, and in the first eight months of 2022 they registered an increase of 4% compared to the same period last year.

Considering all the presentations, the exports of dulce de leche -which next Tuesday celebrates its day worldwide- have Chile as the main destination.

The International Dulce de Leche Day is celebrated on October 11a date established in 1998 by the Argentine Center for the Promotion of Dulce de Leche and Allied Products to promote its consumption and production, as well as continue to position it as a symbol of Argentine gastronomy worldwide.

Declared Food and Gastronomic Cultural Heritage of Argentina, dulce de leche was consolidated as a symbol of local gastronomy in the world.

According to the most recent surveys of the agricultural portfolio, they indicate that in Argentina 128 thousand tons of dulce de leche are produced per year.

On average, each Argentine consumes 3.2 kilos a yearwhich places it as the fourth most chosen dairy productafter milk, cheese and yogurt.

As for the forms of consumption at home, the main one is spread, and to a lesser extent in sweet preparations and desserts and by the spoonful.

Also, dulce de leche is one of the ice cream flavors preferred by Argentines.

According to the Ice Cream and Allied Artisan Manufacturers Association (Afadhya), the frozen milk candy It is the most requested taste, followed by chocolate with almonds and, in third place, the common dulce de leche.

The main Argentine exporter of the product is santafesina company San Ignacio, which has the international BRC-GS certification and includes on its label the seal of quality “Alimentos Argentinos: a natural choice”.

In 2021 the company exported -on average, considering all formulations and presentations- about 72 tons per month and, in the first eight months of 2022, an additional 10% compared to the same period in 2021.

Chile is also the main buyer of dulce de leche made by the company, followed by “Canada, Brazil, the United States and Canada; in the European Union, the main market is Spain,” explained Alejandro Reca, CEO and director of San Ignacio.
