Like Venezuelans, Haitians, Cubans and Nicaraguans, many Dominicans are also migrating to the United States through Mexico.

Why does the measure announced by the US not include Dominicans?

Santo Domingo-. The United States government announced this Thursday a new plan that favors Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan and Haitian immigrants.

The plan will allow the monthly entry into the United States of some 30,000 immigrants from those four countries.

However, the regulations do not include Dominicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans or Hondurans.

Like Venezuelans, Haitians, Cubans and Nicaraguans, many Dominicans are also migrating to the United States through Mexico.

The explanation is simple: the plan has a political, social and economic basis.

It is political because it includes Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, three countries in Washington’s sights due to the type of government that prevails in those nations.

It is social because it will allow a large number of people with critical problems to enter the United States and improve their living conditions.

Meanwhile, economically, it seeks to protect Haitians who are fleeing misery and the threat of the armed gangs that prevail in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

The new measure clarifies that people who apply to enter the United States to receive asylum must prove that there is a danger of being arrested in their countries of origin and that their lives are in danger.

That is not the case of the thousands of Dominicans who are emigrating to the United States, via Central America and Mexico.

The US government clarified that people who wish to enter that country must do so through the corresponding legal channels and that, otherwise, offenders will be returned to their nations “immediately.”

“Don’t show up at the border. Stay where you are and request (access) legally,” President Joe Biden said Thursday.

«If your application is approved, you will be able to enter. If it is denied or you try to cross into the United States illegally, you will not be allowed access,” the US president warned.

Many Dominicans have traveled to the United States illegally in recent months, in order to change their standard of living.
