Who is Ilan Goldfajn: the new president of the IDB

Ilan Goldfajn was proposed by the government of Jair Bolsonaro and will take office on December 19, 2022 for a period of five years.

Trajectory

Between 2016 and 2019 he held the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil. The IMF notes that during its tenure it oversaw the implementation of major regulatory changes that opened the door to new entrants in the financial services sector, boosted innovation and digitization, and promoted the growth of fintech companies, which has had an impact positive in the Brazilian financial sector.

In 2017 he was named Central Banker of the Year by The Banker magazine, and the following year he was named Best Central Banker by Global Finance magazine.

Goldfajn served as Chairman of the Advisory Council of Credit Suisse Brasil. He has also worked as a consultant for various international organizations, such as the World Bank, the United Nations and the IMF.

Studies

He has a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a Master’s degree in Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Federal University, both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Goldfajn will be the seventh president of the IDB. Follow Queen Irene Mejía Chacón ai (2022); Mauricio Claver-Carone (2020-2022); Luis Alberto Moreno (2005-2020); Enrique V. Iglesias (1988-2005); Antonio Ortiz Mena (1971-1988); and Felipe Herrera (1960-1971).
