The first photographs of five of the nine political prisoners who are under house arrest, including the most popular presidential candidate Cristiana Chamorro; the deputy purged from the National Assembly, María Fernanda Flores; and the political commentator Jaime Arellano, under that precautionary measure since their respective arrests.
Former diplomats Mauricio Díaz and Edgard Parrales were sent to their homes after months in captivity in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as “El Chipote”, a place where they are tortured, according to reports from their relatives.
All prisoners of conscience are accompanied by officers from the Directorate of Special Police Operations (DOEP) and are dated April 22, 2022.

Chamorro is a journalist and former director of the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation (FVBCH). She was fined 1,621,586.85 dollars and 56,961,299.43 córdobas, corresponding to “three times the value of the laundered amount,” according to the court ruling to which she had access. Article 66. She was sentenced to eight years in prison. She was the most popular candidate and was leading in the voting intention polls to beat Ortega at the polls.
Díaz and Parrales were alternate and permanent ambassadors of Nicaragua to the Organization of American States (OAS), respectively. Both are political analysts, they gave their opinion on the national life and the foreign policy of the Nicaraguan dictatorship. They were also sources of inquiries for the independent media.
Díaz was found guilty of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity” and sentenced to nine years in prison. Parrales still faces a political trial against him.
María Fernanda Flores de Alemán, wife of former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Alemán, has been under house arrest since her arrest. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for the alleged crime of provocation, proposition and conspiracy to undermine national integrity, to the detriment of the State of Nicaragua and Nicaraguan society, in accordance with Law 1055.
Nicaraguan justice has sentenced more than 30 political prisoners who were captured between May and November 2021, prior to the “electoral farce” of Daniel Ortega. The detainees in that raid correspond to the most visible faces of the Nicaraguan opposition.
