Third try. On the last Thursday, January 5, the Plenary of the Congress approved the list of congressmen that will select the highest command of the Ombudsman. The request to define the vote in the plenary agenda was made hours before by parliamentarians from dissimilar political tendencies, members of the Board of Spokespersons: Patricia Juárez (FP), Flavio Cruz (PL), Elvis Vergara (AP), Eduardo Salhuana (APP), Álex Paredes (BM), Jorge Montoya (RP) and Adriana Tudela (AP). The vote ended with 91 in favor, 13 against and six abstentions.
It’s about the third claim of the Legislature to appoint the head of the body. Previously, the Judiciary demanded the suspension of the process for “lack of transparency and citizen participation.”
However, the payroll was still approved. The political groups that will have representation will be popular actionMagisterial Block, Avanza País, popular renewal, people forceAlliance for Progress, Free Peru and Democratic Peru together with Podemos.
The populist Elvis Vergara, investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office for the alleged crime of criminal organization, and Paúl Gutiérrez (Bloque Magisterial), prosecuted for the same alleged illegal activity, are the only two legislators on the list with ongoing investigations.
The parliamentary right has four congressmen: Patricia Chirinos (Avanza País), Alejandro Muñante (Popular Renewal), Arturo Joy and Eduardo Castillo (both from Fuerza Popular).
For its part, Alianza para el Progreso, César Acuña’s party, presents Idelso García as a participant. The election of Peru Libre – María Agüero is running as a file – and Peru Democrático – Podemos still remains to be confirmed.
