The night of next Friday June 23 the traditional will be held San Juans night, typical celebration of the Iberian Peninsulaparticularly of Catalonia (Spain) that years ago arrived in Uruguayan lands.
Being a celebration of the northern hemisphere, it is a celebration of worship to the sun to receive the summer solstice. In Uruguay, on the other hand, the celebration coincides with the arrival of winter. It is also celebrated by Christians around the birth of Saint John the Baptist on June 24.
The Fiesta de San Juan has a close link with the harvest seasontherefore it promotes good wishes for the coming times.
In Spain, the tradition includes make a wish while jumping over the fires of the bonfires made on the beach. The celebrants also often jump the waves when midnight comes.
In Montevideo, various bonfires have been held for years in different parts of the capital, which also include gastronomic offers and cultural events linked to Spain.
