WHAT IS THE DNI?

The DNI is the only personal identity card in Peru for all civil, commercial, administrative, judicial acts and, in general, for all those cases in which, by legal mandate, it must be presented, including the right to vote of each citizen. The use of the DNI is mandatory for all citizens, according to articles 26 and 27 of Law No. 26497, which is the Organic Law of Reniec.

WHY IS THE ID IMPORTANT?

Having a DNI is important because it allows access to all the services and benefits of the State. It is a right and a duty, given that it is the only reliable identification instrument, which has up-to-date information: both the main data of the citizen such as their address, their marital status, their photograph, their signature and their fingerprints.

You should always carry your ID and it is important that you report its loss or theft since any illegal act that is done with it will be your responsibility.

HOW MANY TYPES OF DNI ARE THERE?

There are three types of DNI and these are:

  • DNI for minors (yellow). If your son, daughter or a minor under your guardianship is between 0 and 16 years old, you can request the DNI for minors (yellow). The number that the minor receives will be the same throughout his life.

  • DNI for adults (blue). You can take them out from the age of 17 or over. This DNI is valid for 8 years.
  • Electronic DNI (DNIe). If you are 18 years or older, you can process the Electronic DNI that allows you to prove your identity in person and electronically. It replaces the blue DNI and allows you to digitally sign electronic documents and process documents such as official records or registration certificates via the Internet from your home or office.

WHEN WAS THE DNI CREATED?

The DNI began to be used in Peru since 1996, when the electoral book was eliminated, which was historically created for a voting issue rather than identification, because the numbers corresponded to the electoral roll. Even if you changed your address, they changed your book number. Today the DNI number is unique because the criterion is not electoral, but identification.
