‘We have been threatened with firearms’: workers on land conflicts in Cauca

The situation in the municipality of Padilla (Cauca)where several communities have invaded sugar cane farmsindicating that these lands belong to them.

In the midst of this situation, several of the land workers in Cauca They stated that they have lost their jobs and others have received threats or have been attacked by the natives, According to two members of the North Valley Victims Association.

In dialogue with RCN Worldone of those affected who was identified as Pedro for security reasons, pointed out that “We are farm workers and we are being seriously affected, This has worsened not only because of the invasions but also because of the violation of our rights to our physical integrity. We have been physically and verbally attacked, they have even intimidated us with firearms.”

Another of the workers, who identified himself as Andrés, specified that this situation puts hundreds of families at risk because his livelihood depends directly on the work they do on those lands, while adding that the region’s economy has been fractured by the invasion of the land and the protests.

In this sense, the worker pointed out that there are around 5,000 hectares that are not producing, Also causing the loss of thousands of jobs.
