We are with democracy… we are with Lula

We are with democracy… we are with Lula

The country that inaugurated in 1964 the COUPS D’ETAT that devastated our America and that brought almost two decades of dictatorships, with thousands of disappeared and political prisoners, today is once again the victim of a desperate attempt by the Bolsonaro right to deny what the polls decided : Lula President of Brazil.

Bolsonaro’s militant mobs, who do not accept the will of the majority of the Brazilian people, tried to cut off the functioning of the government and call for military intervention.

In a coordinated action they invaded the Presidential Palace, the Congress and the Supreme Court of Brazil.

They attacked the three powers of the state.

They attacked the essence of democracy: the three bases of the Republic, the government, the voices of the people in Congress and Justice in the Supreme Court.

The places were not fortuitous or spontaneous, nor the way it was done. It was a planned action that sought support, which fortunately did not come from the Armed Forces.

But today Brazil and America are different. The sabers that once severed the foundations of democracy and coexistence today are part of our Republics and have turned a deaf ear to these orchestrated demonstrations.

President Lula immediately decreed federal intervention in the Brasilia area and named Ricardo Capelli, Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, as Comptroller General, until January 31.

The government’s firm hand against the coup right wing will undoubtedly stop this desperate attempt to overturn the popular will.

A firm hand that is based on the democratic instruments that the Republic has to defend itself against the attacks of those who seek a coup in Brazil.

We have no doubt that the democratic forces will prevail, that this attempt to start a coup d’état will suffer the same fate as other coup attempts that occurred in our America and that happily are no longer in operation today.

Democracies have made their way in our America by dint of the struggle and blood of thousands of comrades who overthrew dictatorships years ago with a mixture of sacrifice, tenacity, and republican principles that made our continent proud.

The great boulevards that opened up in our America gave way to new generations of strong democratic governments that erased, as that of PRESIDENT LULA does today, the attempts of those who seek to return to a dictatorial past in our continent that the Latin American peoples will do the impossible for never exist again.

The defense of democracy in our America is not a matter of political factions but rather the duty and right of all Latin Americans, who today raise our fists in defense of the government of President Lula and will do so against all those who threaten freedom and democracy on our continent.

Lula is president by the will of the Brazilian people and will conclude his term with the support of all of America.
