“We are going to unite, we are going to go out”, the claim of a desperate Cuban mother

María Luisa madres cubanas

MIAMI, United States.- The Cuban María Luisa Fleitas, mother of the Cuban political prisoner Rolando Vásquez Fleitas, made a call this Thursday to all the mothers of Cuba to protest the injustices to which the young people who protested on September 11 are being subjected. July 2021 throughout the country.

From La Güinera, María Luisa denounced the situation of her son and of young people like him who have been sent to prison, with long sentences, without proof of having committed any crime. This, added to the economic crisis that is currently being experienced on the island, has hundreds of desperate mothers.

“What they are doing with these children is an abuse. I am willing to leave, but the mothers in Cuba do not want to join. I don’t care if I go out and they hit me or they take me to jail,” said María Luisa during an interview with Yaima Pardo La Red for CubaNet.

“My son is crazy in prison, he didn’t smoke, and he already does,” said the woman, who claims the authorities for the convictions of boys against whom “there is no evidence. Why are they condemning those children? ”, She lamented.

According to him, the sentences are excessive because in the trial they did not show evidence to any of the accused. “For the prosecutors and for this government they are shoeshine boys. They didn’t care at all what the lawyers said and what the lawyers showed.”

Rolando Vásquez Fleitas was initially sentenced to 21 years in prison, and in the appeal trial the sentence was reduced to 12 years, something that his mother still considers excessive.

“My son is not even seen in the demonstration. According to the videos presented by the lawyers, my son is on the opposite sidewalk to the demonstration, they are not seen throwing stones or doing anything. You see my son walking and going down D Street, coming here. It was all a lie, it was all a setup, ”he denounced.

María Luisa also spoke about lawyers’ fees, in a country where the average salary of a working person is enough to eat.

And to them is added the economic crisis: “I haven’t been able to take food to my son in prison for two months, there is nothing, the stores are bare.”

“We are going to unite, we are going to go out”, asks María Luisa, who since the imprisonment of her son after the massive demonstrations of 11J lives in “depression”.
