Volkswagen ID.Buzz: the past looks to tomorrow

The Combo or formally known as T1is back to reincarnate in an electric propulsion minivan that seems to have been brought from the distant future to become a revolutionary vehicle and thus anticipate the mobility of tomorrow.

The ID.Buzz is more than another offer that arrives before the effervescence of the electric carsis one more step from volkswagen in his progress towards a brand of low environmental impact.

Fit for the future

The T1 came in the 50’s. Its simple and reliable mechanics and ample cargo space placed it as a work tool in a European continent that was in a process of recovery after World War II. The present for ID Buzz is totally different, although it is also true that it plays a transcendental role in VW’s strategy and in the race to create a Zero Emissions portfolio.

His advanced appearance too reminds the original model and that can be seen in the enlarged emblem or the almost vertical and very short front. They are followed by large glazed areas such as the windshield or the side windows. The cargo version called ID will also be sold at par. Buzz Cargo.

Its dimensions show a total length of 4.7 meters by 1.99 meters wide and 1.94 meters high. Thanks to its short overhangs and wide wheelbase, you can count on a really spacious interior that for the passenger version is satisfied with 3 rows of seats while for the commercial version it will have a cargo volume of 3.9 cubic meters.

The passenger version will initially carry 5 passengers through two individual seats in the first row and a continuous bench in the second but with well-defined spaces. Its cargo volume is 1,121 liters, which will grow to 2,205 with the second row folded. volkswagen reported that in the future there will be versions for 6 and 7 passengers and with an extended wheelbase that will reach 2,988 millimeters.

shared platform

For the development of its electric vehicles, Volkswagen developed the MEB, a platform that is used by the ID.3 and the ID.4, which aims to become an element of value and cost cutting as the platform currently is. MQB, which thanks to its scalability and design, can be used in the different makes and models of the Volkswagen Group. Both versions, cargo and passengers, reach the European market with a 77 kWh battery which powers the 150 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle, just as it was originally in the T1 or Kombi.

The position of the battery along the floor of the vehicle allows a better use of the interior space, in addition to the fact that the weight distribution is almost perfect and the center of gravity is very low. The lithium-ion battery can be used with alternating current (AC) of 11 kW or by fast charging (direct current), in which it supports a power of up to 170 kW. When charged in this way, the battery charge level increases from 5 to 80% in about 30 minutes.

The ID.Buzz debuts the function Plug&Charge, with which the user only has to connect his vehicle to public charging centers without having to worry about anything else. By being subscribed to the services of one of the energy providers and once you have entered your credit card, the system will provide the load without having to do anything additional to the charger. This service will also allow the car to provide energy to the home, for example, if it has surplus energy stored.

This model, in addition to its innovation as an electric minivan, also launches the Plug&Charge service with which the user only has to connect to a public charging network and the system will take care of everything else, from the charge level to managing the payment. The battery along the car floor improves weight distribution.
