Venezuelan leads volunteer unit in Ukraine to fight Russian soldiers

José David Chaparro along with his comrades-in-arms distributes food and other supplies to communities in Ukraine damaged by the Russians

The war that broke out in Ukraine, for approximately 50 days, generated in its population the need to join the defense of the territory together with the Armed Forces of that country to counteract the “military operation” that Russia undertook against the former Soviet republic.

In that sense, a 55-year-old Venezuelan from San Cristóbal decided to join as a volunteer those defense groups of the country that currently distributes humanitarian aid to the most affected. His name is José David Chaparro and he has lived in kyiv since the 1990s.

This Venezuelan, according to an article by the EFE agency and which was reviewed by The Nation of Tachira, He traveled to Ukraine in order to study International Law and there he opened a legal services company, stating that private property “did not exist” in that nation.

He even served in the Strategic Planning Office of Venezuela and was on the team that coordinated Hugo Chávez’s first visit to Russia. That gave rise to his appointment as Chargé d’Affaires of our country in Moscow between 2001 and 2005.

Chaparro explained that the call to join arms in Ukraine was “stronger” than that of the anti-government protests in Venezuela in the first years of Nicolás Maduro in power. In this regard, he stated that in our country “we did not achieve the goal of restoring democracy” and adds that in Ukraine he would not miss the opportunity to do something for the nation that welcomed him.

He said he did not understand the reason for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, an act he described as “barbaric.” He also explained that this situation made him learn about the spirit of cooperation, sharing and understanding human pain. He added that his comrades-in-arms address him as “commander” in Spanish, despite the fact that Andean speaks Russian and Ukrainian.

Every morning he dresses in his military uniform, his cap and his rifle. He meets with his division mates, all of them Ukrainians, and they load their carts with boxes of food, water, basic goods and even gasoline to power electricity generators in villages devastated by Russian bombing.
