Venezuela participated in the Latin American workshop on “Control of orphan sources in the metal scrap industry”, in the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The activity served as a stage for experts from the region to present recommendations to passively take advantage of radioactive materials and thus prevent them from being mistakenly transferred to the scrap metal industry, which would pose a risk to the population, according to a press release. of the Venezuelan Technological Scientific Pole.
According to Press releasethe general director of Access and Use of Technologies of the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (Mincyt) and member of the National Liaison Office to the IAEA for Venezuela, Héctor Núñez, highlighted the participation that the country had in training spaces , which seeks to link technological evolution with social welfare, working under the slogan “Atoms for Peace” and implementing strategies that help reduce radioactive contamination in the environment.
Disused sources are understood to be those that have ceased to be used for their original purposes such as medicine, industry and research and which, given their radioactive decay, are not intended to be used again, consequently, they become disused sources.
In the case of orphan sources, they are those sources that are not under the control of the regulatory entity, either due to abandonment or due to unrecorded income.
