Venezuela participated in a regional meeting against human trafficking

In order to establish a platform for the exchange of skills and training, with a view to strengthening assistance to victims of human trafficking, the II Meeting of the Regional Platform against Human Trafficking was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. People and the Smuggling of Migrants, on July 4 and 5.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the future platform will be made up of inter-institutional coordination mechanisms against trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants in each of the South American countries, made up of the foreign ministries, the Ombudsman of the People and prosecutors of the Public Ministry, within the framework of the Network of specialized prosecutors in the fight against human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants of the Ibero-American Association of Public Prosecutors (Redtram).

During the meeting it was agreed to create a work plan for the prevention, assistance and prosecution of these crimes, with the participation and inter-institutional commitment of the participating countries.

Delegations from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Peru, Paraguay and Venezuela participated in the meeting, convened within the framework of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

The Venezuelan representation was made up of the General Director of Consular Relations of the People’s Power Ministry for Foreign Relations, Yoimara Meléndez; the general director for the Comprehensive Protection of the Family and Women of the Public Ministry, Karolayn Parra and the director of Matters of Special Attention of the Ombudsman’s Office, Edward Ferraza.

This second meeting continues the commitments and conclusions of the first, and responds to the cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Latin America.

In addition, it has the participation of representatives of the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Eurofront agency.
