The Diocese of Acarigua-Araure in Portuguesa did not have a bishop since November 2016 since Monsignor Juan Carlos Bravo was transferred to the newly created Diocese of Petare
Pope Francis appointed this Monday, August 22, the priest Gerardo Ernesto Salas Arjona, who currently serves as the current secretary of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference and who belongs to the clergy of the Archdiocese of Mérida, as bishop of the Acarigua-Araure Diocese in Portuguesa.
In this way, the priest Salas Arjona replaces Monsignor Juan Carlos Bravo Salazar, who was in charge of the Diocese of Acarigua-Araure until November 16, 2021when the Supreme Pontiff created the Diocese of Petare and sent Monsignor Bravo to be its bishop.
The new bishop of the Diocese of Acarigua-Araure was born in Bailadores, Mérida state, on October 20, 1966. His basic studies were done at the Tulio Febres Cordero Basic School in that same city and his secondary studies at the San Buenaventura Minor eminary. the Archdiocese of Merida.

He received priestly ordination on August 22, 1992.

He has studied Philosophy and Theology at the Major Seminary of Mérida, and has obtained a Liturgy Degree at the Santa Justina Institute, in Padua – Italy (1996-1998).
Most of his priestly performance has been carried out in Mérida, specifically in Ejido. But he has also been a pastor in several parishes, and has also worked as Spiritual Director of the Cursillos de Cristiandad Movement, a position he has held since 2003, according to a press release from the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference.
