HAVANA, Cuba.- From the Valle Grande maximum rigor prison, located in the municipality of La Lisa, west of the Cuban capital, several inmates denounce (on condition of anonymity) that at approximately 9 p.m. on Tuesday On September 20, a great stir arose in the prison around the protester Pedro Albert Sánchez, who declared himself on a hunger strike since Sunday, September 11, demanding the restitution of his rights, as well as his release and that of all imprisoned protesters.
According to this, Professor Albert Sánchez would have been taken urgently to the infirmary and later transferred from the prison, although so far the inmates have not been able to obtain details because neither the military nor the health personnel reveal information on the subject; even the prisoner who acts as a doctor is silent.
Nevertheless, the deteriorating state of health of the striker in earlier days makes them fear for their lives. The prisoners also add that this Wednesday, September 21, an atmosphere of great tension could be seen in the prison, as well as a greater number of guards than usual.
For his part, the son of Professor Albert Sánchez appeared at the prison and in the early hours of Wednesday afternoon he received a phone call from an unidentified doctor from the National Hospital, who assured him that the protester was “well.” in the convict room of that health center. According to the young man, the doctor promised to call him again to keep him up to date on the situation. However, at no time has he been able to speak to his father, so he cannot attest that he is alive or conscious.
Physics and mathematics teacher Pedro Albert Sánchez, 66, suffers from prostate cancer and chronic ulcerative colitis. He has been in captivity since November 3, 2021, accused of the alleged crimes of public disorder and contempt, without having received the prosecutor’s request so far. The authorities promised to hold a trial at the end of July or beginning of August, but they have not fulfilled it.
