The committee of the House of Representatives of the United States that has investigated the details of the failed coup d’état on January 6 of last year with the storming the capitolhas withdrawn the summons sent to the former president donald trump to appear before the legislature to explain his behavior that day.
The committee arrived at the conclusion that the former president is responsible for sedition for his support for the assailants.
“In light of the imminent end of our investigation (January 2, 2023), the Select Committee can no longer seek the specific information covered by the subpoena,” Chairman Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, wrote in a letter to the Trump’s lawyer.
Therefore, “through this letter, I formally withdraw the subpoena issued to former President Trump and notify you that you are no longer required to comply with or produce records in response to said subpoena,” Thompson added.
Trump should not hold any public office again, report concludes
The committee subpoenaed Trump in October to obtain documents and testimony related to its investigation into the attack on the US Capitol. Trump responded by suing the committee to block the subpoena.
The same committee had already withdrawn a number of subpoenas related to other witnesses as it wraps up its work. Still, Trump took advantage of the subpoena’s withdrawal, stating on his social media platform that “they probably did it because they knew I didn’t do anything wrong, or they were about to lose in court.”
The committee concluded its investigation by suggesting that the Justice Department consider a criminal prosecution on four separate charges. Panel references, however, do not carry legal weight. And the Justice Department has already been examining Trump as part of its investigation into the Jan. 6 and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
