US Embassy in Havana starts visa appointments this June

MIAMI, United States.- The United States Embassy in Havana announced this Thursday that starting this month, “the Department will schedule all immigrant visa appointments at the United States Embassy in Havana for immediate family members, including spouses. and children under 21 years of age of US citizens, with interviews by July 2022”.

According to one publication In social media accounts, the diplomatic headquarters explained that the new opening “follows the steps taken in May to start the processing of all IR-5 cases, or parents of US citizens, for interviews in Havana.”

“This change is part of the current expansion of the functions of the Embassy to facilitate diplomatic engagement and with civil society to provide consular services,” the statement reads.

According to the release, “We chose the immediate family categories in recognition of the importance of family reunification for US citizens and their immediate family members. Although we understand that other applicants may have difficult circumstances given the current conditions.”

The Embassy of the United States in Havana indicated that they continue “without being able to accept requests for transfer of other visa categories,” and they also assured that they will continue “evaluating, to the extent that conditions allow, a greater expansion of the services of visa in Havana.

“Consular staff in Havana continue to provide essential services to US citizens and limited processing of emergency nonimmigrant visas,” the office in the Cuban capital said.

Likewise, the statement adds, while working to expand services in Havana, the United States Embassy in Georgetown, Guyana, will continue to be the main processing location for all Cuban applicants for family preference immigrant visas, and cases of immediate family members who are already scheduled for processing at that location.

Last May, the US Government announced that it would lift some sanctions imposed on Cuba, including the reestablishment of flights to various airports in Cuba, as well as the family reunification program suspended for years.
