Unveil mural in tribute to Willy Chirino on Calle Ocho in Miami

Willy Chirino, mural, calle ocho

MADRID, Spain.- This weekend a mural was unveiled on Calle Ocho in Miami as a tribute to Cuban singer-songwriter Willy Chirino for his 50-year artistic career.

The painting, which measures 60 feet (18.2 meters) high and 55 feet (16.5 meters) wide, had been commissioned by the Miami Mayor’s Office from Chilean artist Alexandra Seda.

The mural reproduces a photograph of Chirino and has a background where clouds and a Cuban flag can be seen.

Days before, the musician had shared in his social networks a publication in which he praised the work of Alexandra Seda.

“How great your talent, your effort, your dedication, climbing up and down on that crane for more than a month defying the rains and bad weather. There are no words to thank him,” she said.

On the occasion of this tribute, Chirino expressed to The Americas Newspaper: “For many years in this city from which I receive wonderful support and affection.”

The interpreter of popular songs such as “Our day is coming” and “Lajinera”, living in the United States since he was fourteen years old, has been one of the most representative voices of Cuban exile music.

In January 2023 he will be honored again with the exhibition “Willy Chirino: 50 years of music”, which will exhibit personal and valuable items for him at the Miami History Museum for having accompanied him on his musical career.

Among other recognitions to the singer-songwriter is the delivery of the Key to the City of Miami, received at the Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, in April 2021; as well as the John S. McCain Freedom Award to the people of Cuba, awarded by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in October of the same year, “for rise up against the dictatorship and demand a democratic future.”
