MIAMI, United States. – It is “unlikely” that the regimes of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela will be invited to the Summit of the Americas organized by the United States, said a senior State Department official quoted by the agency on Wednesday Reuters.
“It is unlikely that they are there,” US Deputy Secretary of State Brian Nichols told a group of reporters.
The IX Summit of the Americas will take place next June in the city of Los Angeles. Regional leaders in attendance will discuss issues related to democracy in the West, various media outlets have reported.
Following Nichols’ statements to the press, the three Latin American regimes are expected to be snubbed by the White House. The guest list will be published in the coming days by the United States Government.
On the other hand, Nichols indicated that, even if Nicolás Maduro’s regime was left out of the Summit, the invitation of the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, would depend on the White House.
In this sense, Nichols expressed his “deep respect” for the “interim government” of Guaidó.
Regarding Nicaragua, the US official said that the government headed by Daniel Ortega had “ceased to have any semblance of democracy as a result of the electoral farce” held in 2021.
Last monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, denounced that the United States was trying to exclude Cuba from the IX Summit of the Americas.
In Press conference Offered before official and foreign accredited media on the island, the official assured that Washington had been “making intense efforts and exerting pressure on the countries of the region to try to exclude Cuba from the IX Summit of the Americas.”
“The United States resorts once again to all kinds of resources and lies to assert the right won by Cuba and its people to be present at these Summits on equal terms with the rest of the countries in the region,” said Rodríguez Parrilla.
Despite the fact that Cuba does not appear as an active member of the Organization of American States (OAS), the island’s regime participated in the last two editions of the Summit of the Americas, held in Panama (2015) and Peru (2018).
