The Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos) denounced that the continuity of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo in power “is plunging the country into an increasingly dramatic social, political and economic crisis.”
The political group points out that in Nicaragua people continue to be imprisoned, citizens cannot find jobs, families continue to suffer and the population continues to migrate “at all costs” – even on their own lives.
“The few resources of the State are destined to strengthen the repressive organs such as the Police, Army and paramilitaries,” Unamos highlights on its Twitter social network account.

Nicaragua has been experiencing a social, political, economic and human rights crisis since April 2018 when the Ortega-Murillo regime tried to approve a failed social security reform that increased the share of workers and employers. In addition, a 5% tax was imposed on retirees’ pensions.
The population, mostly young, took to the streets to protest in support of the elderly who would be affected by the measure, the regime repealed the reform, but ordered to repress the demonstrations with blood and fire, which left a balance of 355 dead, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
The same organization documented the violations of the human rights of Nicaraguans, the use of vigilantes in the repression and the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) concluded that crimes against humanity were committed in the country.
All this situation has triggered an unprecedented migration of Nicaraguans to countries such as the United States, Costa Rica, Spain and Panama. Dozens of nationals trying to cross the Rio Grande have died on the United States-Mexico border.
Some are fleeing repression for their participation in civic protests and others are leaving the country due to the socioeconomic crisis that is plaguing homes.
