Unión Eléctrica de Cuba announces more blackouts due to generation deficit

MIAMI, United States. — The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) reported about new interruptions to the electricity service this Sunday due to the electricity generation deficit on the Island.

The entity stated in social networks that for today’s session a maximum affectation of 500 megawatts (MW) is estimated due to the outage of several thermoelectric plants.

According to the UNE, units 6, 7 and 8 of the Máximo Gómez thermoelectric plant (CTE Mariel), a unit of the CTE Otto Parellada (Havana), unit 4 of the CTE Diez de Octubre are out of service due to breakdowns. (Camagüey), units 1 and 2 of the CTE Lidio Ramón Pérez (Holguín) and units 3 and 5 of the CTE Antonio Maceo (Santiago de Cuba).

The information adds that in the case of block three of the Antonio Maceo CTE, it is in the start-up process, so it could be incorporated into the electricity system in the coming days.

In total, the limitations on thermal generation will be 499 MW.

In the case of distributed generation, 1,083 MW are unavailable due to breakdown and 418 MW are undergoing maintenance.

According to the UNE, the entry of unit 3 of the CTE Santiago de Cuba (CTE Renté) with 40 MW and the use of 155 MW in diesel engines is forecast for peak hours.

Likewise, an availability of 2,415 MW and a maximum demand of 2,900 MW are estimated for that time, for a deficit of 485 MW, for which an affectation of 560 MW is forecast for the peak hour.

The Electric Union reported that during the day yesterday the service was affected due to a deficit in generation capacity throughout the day. The maximum affectation during peak hours was 818 MW at 8:30 p.m. The service was affected throughout the morning.

The entity added that all consumption restriction measures are implemented in the state sector to limit power cuts to the residential sector as much as possible.
