UN Resident Coordinator: It is time for tax reform

The fiscal pact and a financing strategy for the country are instruments that can contribute a lot to the DR’s progress

The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in the Dominican Republic, Mauricio Ramírez, considered yesterday that the country is at the moment to carry out a fiscal reform, which allows it to assume the challenge posed in the National Development Strategy (END): achieving a fiscal pact .

“The fiscal pact is key to financing the development of this country and, without a doubt, to implementing the 2030 agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals,” he stated when interviewed prior to the 2024 Sustainability Forum held in the Hotel El Embajador.

He specified that the fiscal pact and a financing strategy for the country are instruments that can contribute a lot to the progress and prosperity that the Dominican Republic has.

He recalled that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) supports fiscal reform and a fiscal responsibility law, which are key to moving forward in the direction of better management of public financing.

He said that the country has a tax burden of around 14% of GDP, very low compared to the region, which has an average of 22%.

He considered that President Luis Abinader’s call to carry out a concerted and dialogued process is an excellent way forward to have a fiscal reform and a financing strategy for development much more in line with the national context that the country is experiencing.

He pointed out that the private sector has made its observations and recommendations that must be listened to when the tax reform is presented.

He highlighted that the UN supports the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development in the establishment of a technical unit through an initiative that seeks financing for the development of the country.
