Ukrainian refugees are placed in a temporary shelter in Tijuana

All the people from Ukraine who arrive at the Tijuana airport are received by a group of volunteers and Mexican immigration authorities, who later take them to the shelter where they have access to food, a space to spend the night and wait until they are called to enter the United States.

On Saturday, the first group of refugees, about 100 people, arrived at the site, and the same number was expected this Sunday.

When Ukrainians enter the shelter, they show a code that automatically registers them on a platform created by the volunteers, which gives them the shift number in which they will have to leave the border port.

Adriana Espinoza Nolasco, Undersecretary of Immigration Affairs of Baja California, told Efe that the installation of this shelter is due to the constant increase in recent weeks of people from Ukraine in the city, who were concentrating in a public transport booth at one side of the port of San Ysidro, in addition to providing security especially to families.

“People come directly to the shelter, here they begin to be assigned the number (to enter the United States) and all this is the work of the volunteers; the shelter will be timeless and will have what is necessary so that the people who arrive can finish their paperwork to get to the United States,” he said.

Nassar, one of the refugees who arrived in the first group at the shelter, travels with his two younger brothers and his goal is to get to California, after they could no longer be in his native kyiv.

The three made a long trip that included stays in countries such as Germany, Poland, Spain and from there to Mexico City, to later arrive in Tijuana.
