The Argentine Government reported that in its capacity as holder pro tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the expanded network of diplomatic representations of the regional bloc “is active” with the purpose of “seeking the safest and of citizens of the countries of the region in which the war between Ukraine and Russia is taking place “through mechanisms of consular cooperation”.
“Argentina continues to work, accompanying Peru’s initial proposal, to optimize the consular assistance that CELAC countries provide to our nationals. Through this device, it was agreed to maintain direct and permanent coordination between foreign ministries and diplomatic representations” in the conflict zone, it was reported in a statement released by the San Martín Palace.
In this sense, it was recorded that Argentina “made available to this Network a mission of White Helmets and a mobile consulate to assist Latin American and Caribbean people who arrive from Ukraine to the Polish border.”
“The objective is to facilitate the document processing, provide psychological support, and facilitate the logistical means for their passage through the border, providing guidance for their subsequent displacement to the destination where they are going,” he stressed.
It was highlighted that other countries in the region took similar initiatives in the face of this contingency to “strengthen their presence, either by moving consular officials to reinforce their representations, or by incorporating data from their honorary consuls into this new Expanded Network.”
In exercise of the pro tempore presidency of CELAC, Argentina “reaffirms that active cooperation between the countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region constitutes a fundamental tool to respond to the needs of our citizens who are in the area affected,” the statement said.
