In the midst of the period of reflection in which several have declared in National Renewal on relations with the UDI and Evopoli, the unions made a call to leave the conflict behind and work to rebuild trust. All this after the breakdown within the Vamos por Chile, due to the support that the UDI and Evopoli gave to the socialist senator Álvaro Elizalde to preside over the Senate, forming part of a transversal agreement that took place in the Upper House and to which RN did not subscribe. , which led Senator Manuel José Ossandón as a candidate.
The general secretary of the UDI, María José Hoffman, summoned to resolve these issues “behind closed doors” and stop “giving this show and being divided by a position that is not worth it (…) People are tired of see this level of fighting for such a ridiculous charge,” according to Cooperative Radio. In addition, he stressed that “it is important not to return to those 90s fights of the Alliance for Chile that did not lead us anywhere. When we started working together, we were successful and well, perhaps there was a lack of dialogue and we have to talk more.”
Hoffmann, however, defended his party’s decision, assuring that it was “a very good decision to give the Senate governance with a socialist leader, and that has to do with the pragmatism necessary to face this new stage.”
Likewise, the head of the UDI senators’ caucus, Iván Moreira, stressed that “while the UDI acts strategically with the democratic center-left parties to defend and save the institutions that are falling apart, Renovación Nacional insists and prioritizes this dispute for a position in the Senate”.
Moreira warned that “the health of Chile Vamos is obviously at risk and here we have 2 paths: either we try to rebuild our relations in the short term or this will definitely cost us dearly in the future, and later they will regret it.”
