U. de Chile celebrated its 180th anniversary with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: it brought together more than 5,000 people in the middle of ground zero of the social outbreak

The University of Chile held a massive concert as part of the activities for its 180th anniversary, where they had the presence of the National Symphony Orchestra and in which more than 150 artists played Beethoven’s historic musical piece, the Ninth Symphony.

The concert, free of charge, brought together more than five thousand people, who came to the vicinity of the Baquedano Metro Station, in the “zero ground” of the social outbreak, to enjoy and be part of the concert that brought together more than a hundred musicians and choristers from the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile and the University of Chile Symphonic Choir.

The rector of the house of studies, Rosa Devés, maintained that “wide access to art and culture in a democratic manner is essential to strengthen social cohesion, because through artistic expressions and meeting in public spaces, we recognize ourselves as community”.

“Assuming that spaces are common, that they belong to all of us, and that we have the responsibility to take care of them, will improve our coexistence, encouraging civic, democratic and respectful attitudes. We know that the fraternity that the Ninth Symphony celebrates is necessary for the development of a fairer and more egalitarian country for everyone, that country that the University of Chile, in its 180 years of history, has not stopped serving”, he added.

The cultural act was developed with the support of the Metropolitan Regional Government, the RM Presidential Delegation and the municipalities of Providencia and Santiago. The cycle of celebrations began on November 19, 2022 and will end in September of this year.
