Two people who transported coffee in a rental car die in an accident in Cuba

Two deaths and one serious injury is the balance of an accident that occurred this Thursday in Ciego de Ávila, when speeding caused a rental car to hit a taxi.

The deceased were Reinier Ross Martínez and Giover López Ferrer, the passengers of a Hyundai plate T 034 003, and the injured, the deputy director general of provincial Health, Mitza Ivis Castro Márquez, who is in the intensive care unit of the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola de Libertad, in Ciego de Ávila.

Ross Martínez was an ambulance driver for the Integrated Medical Emergency System (Sium) and was used to driving at speeds exceeding 120 kilometers, which is why some network users were suspicious of the reasons for the accident.

“The police had been chasing them, they had already circumvented a fence that they put in the roundabout at the exit of Ciego de Ávila and went over the separator”, posted Jose Carlos, which refers to the loading of the vehicle. “The touring car was loaded with coffee,” he confirmed to 14ymedio a friend of the taxi driver involved in the accident.

The car’s co-driver, López Ferrer, was 51 years old and originally from Pinar del Río.

On the other hand, the early morning of this Friday a transport truck overturned on the highway between Camagüey and Florida and caused at least four deaths, according to what Yamisleydi, a neighbor of one of the deceased, told this newspaper.

“The family is destroyed,” said the young resident of the municipality of Moa, Holguín, where the truck left. “The brother and uncle of one of my neighbors were taken to the hospital in Camagüey and they died there.” The bodies will be transferred to their provinces.

Ismael Regalado lost his father and cousin. “Now they were able to get it out.” As for the possible causes, all he knows is that “apparently the driver lost control and went off the road.”

Some of the reactions on social networks refer to the driver’s fatigue as the cause of the rollover, who would have been overcome by sleep. “At the moment, the drivers in Cuba don’t even have a place to drink coffee,” lamented Julios César, who also commented that there is only gasoline on 26, where there is a cafeteria and a Service Center in Cupet, in the province of Villa Clara. “Imagine the stress, there are few places to rest and bathe. The driver comes and turns, that’s the way things go. We go from bad to worse.”

TO early november the secretary general of the National Road Safety Commission, Reinaldo Becerra, pointed to Mayabeque and Holguín as “the most dangerous provinces.” Right there he announced that from January to September, in “51% of traffic accidents there is a victim.”

The statistic, he said, “reaches 350 deaths and 3,700 injured.” According to official figures, up to January 1 there were 5,612 accidents on the island.
