Tuberculosis is an infectious disease and one of the main causes of mortality worldwide and although it seems like a disease from past centuries, Panama still reports cases of this disease.
Last year alone, 1,497 cases of this disease were reported and this year in the Metropolitan Health Region, 33 cases have already been confirmed and 4 suspected cases have been registered.
According to Dr. Eyra Chaw, coordinator of the regional program for the control of Tuberculosis, the symptoms of this disease are cough for more than 14 days and fever at night.
During an act to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day, Chaw said that “the patient diagnosed with tuberculosis requires comprehensive care to complete the strictly supervised treatment for six months.”
He added that tuberculosis is a deadly disease, but if treated in a timely manner it can be cured. For this condition, there are two treatments for tuberculosis: pulmonary and extrapulmonary, for which there are patients sensitive to treatment and drug resistant, the latter being treatment from nine months to one year with oral or injectable medications.
Xiomara de Mendieta, nurse coordinator of the Adult and Tuberculosis Program in the region, mentions that “it is one of the regions with the most cases, the patient with symptoms is diagnosed by tests with a diagnostic method in two hours, once diagnosed, the patient is admitted to the program and attends for six months which must receive daily treatment and monthly strict medical control for healing.
