After identifying the lowest level of participation of adolescents in the electoral process in the last three decadesthe Superior Electoral Court (TSE) begins to register an increase in the number of young people interested in voting in this year’s election.
According to data from the Electoral Justice, the number of electoral registrations carried out in the first three months of 2022 grew in relation to the last two general elections in the country. From January to March, Brazil gained 1,144,481 new voters in the 15-18 age group. In the 2018 and 2014 elections, 877,082 and 854,838 new bonds were issued, respectively.
The new issues take place in the midst of a mobilization campaign promoted by the Electoral Justice on social networks. Celebrities such as Anitta, Zeca Pagodinho, Whindersson Nunes, Juliette and also international ones, such as the American actor Mark Ruffalo, participated in the call.
According to official statistics, until January of this year, the TSE registered a total of just over 730,000 bonds issued to young people aged between 16 and 17. For teenagers aged 16 and 17, voting is optional.
For the political scientist and TSE analyst Diogo Cruvinel, the young people’s record interest in the first title is justified by a few factors.
“The Electoral Justice always carries out campaigns to raise awareness and encourage the electorate as a whole, especially young people, through the media and in schools. This year, for the first time, the campaign had the spontaneous adhesion of artists and influencers, who dialogue directly with this electorate, which helped to boost these numbers”, he evaluates.
According to him, in addition, we are living in Brazil at a time of heightened political discourse, with greater polarization.
“This scenario tends to encourage young people to have greater engagement and, consequently, seek to participate more actively in the electoral process. And for that, you need to have a voter registration card. The population has become more and more aware of this”, she analyzes.
Term
In 2022, the electoral register will remain open until the 4th of May, the deadline for the voter to request the title, transfer the electoral domicile and settle any pending issues with the Electoral Justice.
