The President of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, signed today (5), in the United States, an agreement to authorize the participation of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the role of observer of the October elections.
The agreement is the second signed by the court with international entities. Last week, the TSE and the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasul) signed a partnership to send a mission with representatives of the entity to observe compliance with electoral rules, the stages of the electoral process and impartiality in the organization of the election.
According to the TSE, the mission will be independent to collaborate with the improvement of the Brazilian electoral system.
The participation of international observers in the elections has already been used in other elections in the country. In 2018 and 2020, OAS missions monitored the voting.
The TSE intends to authorize the sending of missions from other entities that were also invited to act as observers of the elections, among them, the Electoral Network of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), the World Network for Electoral Justice, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (Ifes) and the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (Uniore). The agreements will be the next to be signed.
