Former President Trump said early Friday morning that filing charges against him could result in “potential death and destruction.”
“What kind of person can impeach another – in this case a former president of the United States, who garnered more votes than any sitting president in history and is the frontrunner (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination? – of a crime, when everyone knows that NO crime has been committed, and they also know that the potential death and destruction in such a false accusation could be catastrophic for our country? Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Why and who would do such a thing? Just a psycho degenerate who really hates America!” Trump wrote.
The post marked an escalation in Trump’s barrage of attacks on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a grand jury weighs whether to indict him for underhanded payments to a porn actress in order to silence a alleged affair with Trump during the 2016 campaign.
It is also likely to further fuel concerns that Trump is stoking violence ahead of possible charges.
Last Saturday, Trump said on Truth Social that he would be arrested the following Tuesday, though aides said that claim of his was not based on any warning.
Trump began urging his supporters to protest and “take back our nation.” And he has a rally scheduled for Saturday in Waco, Texas.
His rhetoric has caused alarm when compared to his calls on January 6, 2021, when Trumpist tubas stormed the Capitol to try to stop the certification of the 2020 election results.
Prosecutor Bragg, for his part, has said he will not be intimidated by Trump’s rhetoric. In response to a letter from House Republicans, he argued that the former president “created a false expectation that he would be arrested” with his Truth Social post last weekend.
In addition to the Manhattan investigation, the Justice Department is investigating Trump for his handling of classified documents upon leaving the White House, as well as his conduct surrounding the January 6 riots.
