This Saturday morning there was a closure of the Pan-American highway in the Horconcitos area, Chiriquí province, where at least two indigenous people who were part of the demonstration and kept the road blocked, were run over by agricultural carriers, who decided to continue and forcibly reopen the road.
The rest of the indigenous people, seeing this action, began to throw stones and tires at the carriers, but they did not stop.
Minutes later, the National Police reported that after the incident, five vehicles, presumably involved in this event, were detained.
“In a quick police action, we retained 5 vehicles allegedly involved in an attack on a citizen who participated in the road closure in Horconcitos,” the entity said through its Twitter account.
At that point, the drivers and producers of Chiriquí have been stranded since Friday, after the single dialogue table between the protesting unions and the government failed to even agree on the first point of the 8-point agenda to be negotiated.
On the morning of this Saturday, the country woke up closed in points such as Pacora, Aguadulce, Santiago, El Salado, San Félix, Horconcitos, Viguí, Tolé, San Juan, with the province of Chiriquí being the one that faces the most closures.
Meanwhile, the dialogue table was expected to resume this Saturday from 9:00 am to try to advance on the first point, which deals with the reduction of products from the basic family basket.
Panama faces 16 days of paralysis and the negotiations are stalled, while sectors such as the capital city and nearby provinces, West Panama and Colon, are short of food; and the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí have gas and fuel shortages.
