An official from the mayor’s office of Solís de Mataojo, in the town of Lavalleja, received a prison sentence after it was proven that she stole more than half a million pesos from the municipality.
According to the daily newspaper The Union, the official transferred different amounts of money to her personal account from the mayor’s office on several occasions between May and November 2021. In total, the woman stole 535,005 pesos belonging to the municipal treasury.
The case was verified in the second half of March, when Mayor Verónica Machado found out about it through an email she received from the Treasury Department. The hierarch notified the councilors of the municipality and filed the complaint in the second sectional. Likewise, the Municipality of Lavalleja initiated an administrative investigation of which there was still no result.
After completing the judicial instance, the woman received a sentence of 24 months in prison as the criminally responsible author of a continued crime of embezzlement. The sentence must be served in a mixed regime that provides for six months of effective prison and the remaining (18 months) on probation.
As part of her conditional release, the official must establish her address; report weekly to the police section of her home; perform community service for 10 months; the prohibition to enter and approach the mayor’s office of Solís de Mataojo. All this for the worth time.
On the other hand, as another ancillary measure, for two years he was disqualified from holding public office.
In charge of the case was the 2nd Shift Lavalleja Prosecutor’s Office in charge of prosecutors Cecilia Saavedra and Gonzalo Cardozo.
