After the decision of the Municipality of Montevideo to increase the increase in the ticket by three pesos, opposition councilors reacted on social networks and in press conferences in rejection of that resolution.
As reported by the commune, payment with STM card will increase three pesos and it will go from costing $39 to $42. The ticket through cash payment grows four pesos: it goes from $48 to $52.
Councilors criticize the new ticket price
The nationalist mayor Diego Rodríguez said that it is an “anti-popular measure.” “And as if that weren’t enough, paid parking increased. Collector eagerness and 0 management. That’s how they are,” he commented.
Colorado mayor Matías Barreto criticized “the Montevideo government headed by Carolina Cosse.” And he said: “The money is spent on bread and circuses, but then the bus ticket goes up to the workers. They govern for the wealthiest, and put all citizens in debt by asking for loans and trusts.”
The increase in the price of the ticket “is excessive,” said the white departmental legislator Javier Barrios Bove. “It is said that the increase is a consequence of the fall in ticket sales. With this measure, making the price of the ticket more expensive, the only thing that is going to be achieved is to sell fewer tickets. The Administration must take other measures,” he said.
Barrios Bove said that the commune should eliminate “superfluous expenses.” And he criticized the money that will go to the creation of “parks”, the idea of the commune to modernize some very crowded bus stops. “If that money was used to transfer to the ticket subsidy, $1 of the ticket could subsidize 30 million tickets. That’s why we say that you have to sharpen your ingenuity,” he said.
Raffo’s criticism of Cosse for the price of the ticket
In addition, Laura Raffo questioned the measure. In her case, she referred to a press conference held by Carolina Cosse, in which the departmental head said that she received comments indicating that the image that Uruguay is giving “is complicated by comments” that arrive.
Raffo replied to that message saying: “Upload the ticket and it’s a reality, Montevideans don’t find out ‘by comments'”, he pointed.
